Read Where a Pull-Off Test Failed Before Summarizing Its Result

A pull-off report may contain a strength value that looks ready to copy into a condition register. Keep the reported failure location with that value. A result involving a repair layer, its interface or the underlying concrete can answer different questions, even when the unit printed beside the number is identical.

Identify the question the test was selected to answer

Ask whether the investigation concerns the existing near-surface material, a proposed repair system or an installed interface. The public ASTM description of pull-off testing identifies several possible uses and explains the importance of failure mode. That is background for reading the report, not an instruction to perform the test. The actual method, applicable edition and interpretation belong with the appropriate testing professional.

Keep the location of separation visible

Request the test operator’s description of where separation occurred and any qualification on the result. Do not relabel every value as adhesion merely because that is the spreadsheet column available. Preserve photographs or diagrams supplied with the report where authorized, together with their locations. If the report does not explain the observed failure, ask for clarification rather than filling the gap with an interpretation based on the size of the number.

Connect the interpretation to the proposed action

Ask the qualified reviewer which project criterion is relevant and whether the result supports the particular decision under consideration. Avoid averaging results that the reviewer says represent different failure mechanisms or extending a local result to every surface. A material-removal decision, a preparation review and an installation acceptance question may need different evidence. State what remains unresolved before a repair is selected; a pull-off value alone should not become an assurance about structural capacity, future service life or every condition within the assembly.

Use one row for each field. Mark unknown information clearly and retain the original records.

Worked example

Illustrative example: a fictional facility receives several pull-off results before a coating decision. Its reviewer distinguishes the reported failure locations before preparing the summary. The team keeps the original explanations instead of presenting every number as the same kind of bond-strength finding.
